Bio-narrative

Joyce Roetter received her BFA from the University of Hartford Art School in Connecticut in 1986. While there, Joyce was mentored by conceptual artist Jack Goldstein, and was the assistant curator at Real Art Ways Exhibition Space in Hartford. She also received a minor in Art History from her studies at Wroxton College, in England. After graduation, Joyce traveled through India and Pakistan and in 1988 she moved to Venice Beach California, and opened an alternative art and performance space, I-Klec/tic Studio. For five years she was co-owner of the gallery and manager of a professional color photography lab in Santa Monica. Joyce also printed forensic photographs for the Santa Monica Police Department.
Joyce Roetter received her MFA in 1994 fromArt Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. She studied with Mike Kelly, Steve Prina, Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe, Lita Albuquerque, and Patti Podesta. She also managed the MFA Art gallery and curated exhibitions. In 1995 Joyce became adjuct faculty at the School of Art and Design at Santa Fe Community College Joyce has traveled extensively in Peru, Guatemala, and Belize where she photographed sacred sites and ceremonies. In 1999 she received the prestigious Pollack-Krasner Foundation grant. In 2000 she became a founding member and President of 501C3- Madrid Cultural Projects Inc., which she remained president for 9 years. She administered a Federal grant the organization received, and worked with State Represtative Rhonda King on projects for Madrid, NM. In 2001 Joyce studied with Dr. Jorge Gonzales Ramirez in Tarapoto, Peru at the “Escuela de Shamanism Amazonica. She studied the ancient healing plant ceremonies, as well as at Sacha Mama Botanical Gardens and healing plants sanctuary, in Iquitos, Peru. In 2003 she moved to Sydney Australia for a one year residency and traveled to aboriginal sacred sites. Presently, Joyce continues to teach at the School of Art and Design where she has been teaching photography and studio arts. She will complete her two year apprentiship with Hoshindo Sensei and Reiki master, Voyce Durling-Jones and will be a certified practitioner in 2009. Joyce is also a beekeeper.
